Process for preparing sintered mesophase polyaromatic powder

Prodn. of a sinterable polyaromatic mesophase powder comprises (i) synthesis of a spherolitic polyaromatic mesophase pitch by catalysed pyrolysis of aromatic (-rich) hydrocarbons such as pitches, the Fe complex catalytic starting material having been dissolved in the pitch prior to start of the pyrolysis; (ii) coarse crushing of the pitch to particle size (d) 100 mu or less and extn. of the optically isotropic pitch phase with a solvent (mixt.) with a Hildebrand solubility parameter 8 (9.1 corresponds to THF); (iii) treatment of the predominantly optically anisotropic spherolitic residue in an oxidising atmos., pref. in air or O2 at 170 degrees C or below; and (iv) grinding the prod. to particle size; (d) 10 mu or below.
