The braking effect limitation method protects the cooling system from overheating used for removing the heat generated during braking from overheating. The method involves limiting the braking torque or the braking load of the secondary retarder (4), with detection of the coupling condition of the clutch and the neutral position of the drive transmission (3). The braking torque or braking load of the secondary retarder may be limited as a function of the detected coupling condition of the clutch via a control/regulation device (20).
