Prodn. of an insertion cpd. based on Mn oxide and Li is achieved by solid state reaction between beta -MnO2 powder having a specific surface of less than 7 m2/g and a mean particle size of less than 10 mm., and a Li cpd. in powder form chosen from opt. hydrated oxides, hydroxides, carbonates and nitrates of Li, at 150-500 degrees C for a period sufficient to convert the beta -MnO2 into an oxide of Mn and Li with a stoichiometric or deficient spinel structure.
