The following are claimed: (1) use of extracts (I) of non-photosynthetic filamentous bacteria as substance P antagonists in cosmetic compsns. or for prepn. of pharmaceutical compsns.; (2) cosmetic or pharmaceutical compsns. contg. (I) and prods. (II) with an irritant effect; (3) cosmetic or pharmaceutical compsns. contg. (I) and cell extracts (III) of plants of the Iridaceae family; and (4) cosmetic or pharmaceutical compsns. contg. (I) and cpds. (IV) that reduce the synthesis, release and/or activity of inflammation mediators other than steroidal and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents.
