A method for the isomerisation of organic ethylene compounds comprising one or more carbon-carbon double bonds, wherein the compounds are contacted with an aqueous solution of at least one nickel (0)-derived complex and a water-soluble triarylphosphine in the presence of a predetermined amount of cyanide ions. The method is particularly useful for the isomerisation of ethylene alcohols to give the corresponding aldehydes or ketones.
