Hydrocyanation of organic compounds having an ethylenic double bond is carried out by reaction with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of an aqueous catalyst solution containing a nickel compound and a water-soluble phosphine. Process for hydrocyanation of organic compounds having at least one ethylenic double bond, comprises reacting the compound with HCN in the presence of an aqueous catalyst solution comprising at least one Ni compound and at least one water-soluble phosphine. After the reaction, the organic phase is separated from the aqueous phase. The aqueous phase, which includes a solid phase formed during the hydrocyanation reaction, is treated with HCN to dissolve the solid phase at least partially.
