The method comprises the following operations: BR/ - the position of the accelerator pedal is interpreted as being a desired wheel torque or box output torque by the driver and is used to calculate engine setpoints and the gearbox, BR/ - the positions of the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal are received by a computing device 12 and, from there, centralized control parameters are generated for sources traction units and deceleration units 8, 9, 10, 11 of the traction line, BR/ - data concerning the local pollution of the environment are sent to the computing device 12 and this is taken into account in that in the production of the central control parameters in such a way that a driving mode of the vehicle adapted to the prevailing environmental conditions is determined and indicated to the driver, BR/ - adaptive operation current environment conditions is automatically activated.
