PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively utilizing the epidermis of a plant, butterbur (Petasites japonicus) that has been scrapped. ;SOLUTION: This process for producing Japanese paper or the heat insulating material from the epidermis of butterbur plant bodies is provided with a step where the butterbur epidermis is boiled with hot water at a temp. of about 80-90°C, the step where the boiled butterbur epidermis is pressurized at about 0.3-0.4 atmospheric pressure, a step where the pressurized epidermis is gradually cooled down, a step where the gradually cooled down epidermis is beaten to extract the bast fibers (phloem), a step where water and fiber-dispersing agent are added to the extracted base fibers and they are stirred until they become homogeneous, and the homogeneous dispersion is subjected to the paper-making operation to give wet paper, a step where the wet paper is drained and a step where the drained paper is squeezed and dried.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
