PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position-detecting device for performing the synchronous operation of an SR motor without using a position detection sensor, and its method. SOLUTION: A device is provided with a step function signal generation circuit 17 that generates a step function signal, stator coil winding 3 that is connected to a power supply via a resistor 13 for specifying a time constant on transient response, a switch 14 that applies voltage being applied from a power supply to the stator coil winding 3 and the resistor 13 as a step function voltage based on a step function signal, an inductance detection circuit 16 that detects the voltage on transition response being generated at the stator coil winding 3 and the resistor 13 according to the step function voltage, and a rotary position detection circuit 15 that detects the position of a rotor salient pole 6 based on a detection voltage being detected by the inductance detection circuit 16 and a preset voltage corresponding to the position of the rotor salient pole.
