PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a moment of time when a rotor takes a desired position relative to a stator for any motor by delivering a position detection signal, when the winding inductance of the stator reaches a detection level. SOLUTION: An inductance detecting circuit 6 detects the stator winding inductance of an SR motor 1, keeps the maximum and minimum values thereof and generates a detection level corresponding to a specified rotational position from the maximum and minimum value. A signal for the inductance detecting circuit 6 is compared with a detection level from a rotational position, detecting level generating circuit 9 and a position detection signal is generated, when the rotor of the SR motor 1 reaches a specified position. A control circuit 71 detects arrival of the rotor of the SR motor 1 at a specified position based on a signal from a rotational position circuit 5 and generates a stator winding excitation signal 4, i.e., an optimal drive signal for rotating the SR motor 1 smoothly, from the relation to a next rotational position which is driven.
