PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a novel manganese dioxide of layered crystal structure which is not transformed into a spinel-state even in the repeated charge and discharge by heat-treating a mixed sample of an alkali metal compd. and a manganese compd. SOLUTION: The mixed sample of an alkali metal compd. and a manganese compd. is heat-treated at a temp. of 500-1500 deg.C, then cleaned and dried to produce the manganese dioxide of a layered crystal structure. The alkali metal compd. is an alkaline metal (I) compd., and the nitrate, carbonate or hydroxide of sodium, potassium, rubidium or cesium is exemplified. Manganese oxides (MnO, Mn3 O4 , Mn2 O3 ), nitrate or carbonate is preferably used as the manganese compd.
