PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a reduction in the viscosity of a tapioca starch paste and to provide a method for manufacturing a tapioca starch paste having an increased viscosity. ;SOLUTION: An aqueous solution or an aqueous slurry of a tapioca starch is blended with a 100-2,000 ppm, based on the weight of the tapioca, of a tetrahalogertated sulfolane, and then heated to be gelatinized. The tetrahalogenated sulfolane is preferably 3,3,4,4-tetrachlorotetrahydrothiophene-1,1- dioxide.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
