PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a microorganism capable of cleaning the natural environment or an oligotrophic waste water from an oil refinery or a chemical factory without adding nutrient salts by searching for microorganisms capable of growing on an aromatic compound as a carbon source in a culture medium at a specific phosphorus concentration and a specified nitrogen concentration. ;SOLUTION: A search is conducted for microorganisms capable of growing on an aromatic compound (e.g. benzene, toluene or xylene) as a carbon source in a culture medium at ≤5 ppm phosphorus concentration and ≤50 ppm nitrogen concentration. Ralstonia eutropha B2 (FERM P-16672) and Aureobasidium pullulans B10 (FERM P-16674) are identified as the microorganisms assimilating the benzene and Ralstonia eutropha T23 (FERM P-16671) and Burkholderia pyrrocinia T26 (FERM P-16669) are identified as the microorganisms assimilating the toluene. Furthermore, Ralstonia eutropha × 3 (FERM P-16673) and Burkholderia pyrrocinia × 4 (FERM P-16670) are identified as the microorganisms assimilating the xylene.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
