Method and apparatus for normalizing the characteristic inclination angle in handwriting

PURPOSE: To improve the recognition accuracy of handwritten characters and numerals by analyzing the entropy for each row at the inclination angle of a predicted range, determining an angle minimizing the entropy of an image and positionally transforming the array of pixels in the reverse direction only by quantity equal to the angle. ;CONSTITUTION: The information of an original pixel image stored in a memory 12 is analyzed and the projection entropy of respective rows is calculated by a processor 11. Normally an angle minimizing the entropy is an angle maximizing a distance between adjacent characters/numerals. When the information is determined by the processor 11, the inclination of respective rows of pixels is positionally transformed in the reverse direction to remove the whole inclination. Namely the pixel image of characters/numerals is modified by normalization. When there is no vertical overlap of one digit with a succeeding digit to be easily sensed after removing the whole inclination, the script object is vertically cut off into thin chips to complete segmentation.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
