PURPOSE: To simultaneous evaluate the firing/combustion characteristics on the surface of particle and of the volatile matters emitted into a gas phase through thermal decomposition. ;CONSTITUTION: Solid particles 15 are fed through a particle introduction pipe 5 to a firing position 13 where the particles are floated in a combustible gas flow 6 and then fired by raising the temperature quickly by means of a pulse laser 8. Light emitted from the fired particles is measured by means of a photomultiplexer 19 having a visible/infrared filter 18 and an ultraviolet filter 30. A temperature analyzer 20 analyzes the temporal variation 22 of the particle temperature based on the relationship between the temperature and the ratio of intensity of two different wavelengths of visible light or infrared light. The temporal variation 33 in the emission intensity of OH radical is determined from ultraviolet light. Consequently, the firing/combustion characteristics can be evaluated separately on the surface of particle and for the volatile matters emitted into a gas phase through thermal decomposition. Since the process from tiring to the end of combustion can be tracked for a single particle, the difference of reactivity between particles can also be evaluated.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
