The invention relates to a galvanic coating process for producing a structured surface coating on a workpiece with an electrically conductive surface, as well as covering a device for carrying out the process. In this case, the object to be coated is the cathode of a galvanic bath. The process current will be gradually increased in a germ-forming phase (10,11) and the gradual increase in the current results in the formation of a precipitation of individualized or juxtaposed bodies on the object's surface. Then, the process current will be kept constant during a gradual working time (12) which results in the growth of germs, that is, of the bodies previously produced. The process can be repeated cyclically.
