Novel processes, intermediates and reagents for the preparation of 3-substituted furanose or furanoside compounds of Formula I: CHEM wherein M is hydrogen or alkyl (C5-C7), A is halogen or A may be selected from a moiety of the formula: OR, SR, N7, SCR, OC-R or CN wherein R is hydrogen, branched or unbranched alkyl (C5-C8) or phenyl which compounds have antiviral and other biological activity.
