A wavelength division multiplexing multi-frequencyoptical source is used to provide downstream transmissionof information signals at discrete optical wavelengthsfrom a central office to a plurality of optical networkunits. A passive optical demultiplexer in a remote noderoutes the downstream information signals to the opticalnetworks according to optical wavelength. Broadbandincoherent sources are used to provide upstreaminformation signals at discrete optical wavelengths whichare multiplexed and then routed to the central office fordemultiplexing by the passive optical demultiplexer. Awavelength selective coupler in the central office and ineach optical network unit combines and segregatesdownstream and upstream signals of different opticalwavelengths for routing to a desired destination.
