A welding method that permits thick pieces of metal to be weldedtogether over the entire face of their touching surfaces during aprocess of self organizing, single pass arc welding in theambient air without any special proofing of the welding bathmelt. The higher quality and faster weld when weldingconsiderably thick metals in a single pass is achieved by usingan insulated stationary consumable electrode clamped between theparts to be welded together and by scientifically substantiatedselection of the value of the electric power applied to the endface of the electrode.The arc is distinguished by the fact that the value of its poweris sustained at a level which keeps the pressure of the metalvapor Pme which arises due to vaporization of the electrodematerial in the welding zone higher than the air pressure Patmwith a relation between them complying with the rule Pme ~(1.1-2.0)Patm. This affords protection of the welding bath metal meltagainst air oxidation and interaction with other air elementssuch as N, H, H2O, etc.
