The invention relates to a method of immortalizing a primary mammalian cell comprising overexpressing an Id protein in said cell, a method of inhibiting the immortalization of a primary mammalian cell comprising inhibiting expression of an Id protein in said cell and a method of determining the activity of a compound to alter Id protein expression in a cell comprising contacting said cell with said compound and observing the level of expression of said Id protein.
