This invention is primarily directed to the use of iron oxides as additives to prevent wear and cavitation in the plastic sliding layer of composite bearings, which are made primarily of thermoplastic fluoropolymers and for oil lubricated applications. The addition of iron oxide to the PTFE-based material reduces the fracture of the sliding surface with the advent of cavitation if this material is used in the presence of the outside.
