A thin glass substrate applied to a liquid crystal display device is formed by forming a substrate by processing an etched glass with a thin thickness, and then forming an inorganic film or an organic film in one or more layers. The inorganic film is formed by depositing a material having a compressive stress, and the organic film is formed by applying a material having a small viscosity and irradiating it with light to harden it. The inorganic film or the organic film buries the groove formed on the surface of the glass substrate so as to reduce the substantial size of the groove. When the substrate is cracked, the inorganic film or the organic film sticks firmly to the substrate to prevent crack propagation.
