The present invention relates to a process for producing high and ultra high purity bisphenol-A, comprising a plurality of internally mounted porous trays 42, downcomers 43, and trays 42 having screens 44 and 45; In a multistage suspension reactor column 41 comprising catalyst resin particles 46 placed on screens 44 and 45 in combination with 4 to 12 moles of phenol reacted with 1 mole of acetone to obtain high and ultra high purity bisphenols. A method for preparing -A is provided. In operation all phenol was filled in the top tray and the required amount of acetone was fed to the column 41 through various inlets 52 along the column wall 41. An inert gas rising through the tray 42 and the catalyst particles 46 thereon stirs the reaction liquid and the particles 46 therein to form a suspension and removes water formed during the reaction of phenol and acetone. The reaction mixture in the column is then cooled to form bisphenol-A charge crystals with phenol and mother liquor, adduct crystals are separated from mother liquor and phenol is removed from adduct crystals. By removing water from the reaction mixture, high purity bisphenol-A can be obtained without going through a concentration step before crystallization.
