The controllable damping valve (16,17) is positioned in an annular space (9) formed between the damper cylinder (1) and a container (6) surrounding the cylinder. The valve is hydraulically connected to the piston rod-side working chamber (4) and the working chamber (5) remote from the piston rod, and is formed by a ring-shaped valve body (18, 19). Valve bodies are preferably used for centering the cylinder in the container.
