The transducer has a surface (5) supporting the surface plasmon resonance whose properties, and/or the properties of at least one adjacent region (7,8), are designed and/or variable so that the surface plasmon resonance can be measured by spatially and/or time resolved determination of the intensity of the radiation reflected from the surface. The adjacent region is up to 5 microns from the surface supporting the surface plasmon resonance. An Independent claim is also included for an optical sensor.
