Method and apparatus for displaying of an undetected character in optical character recognition arrangements for subsequent detection

An optical character recognition system isdisclosed which is capable of recognizing out-of-specification characters and custom fonts, in additionto standard fonts such as E13B, OCRA, OCRB andFarington 7B type fonts recorded on documents such asbank drafts and checks. The standard fonts representpredefined characters, and the custom fonts andout-of-specification characters represent undefinedcharacters. The system comprises an optical scanner,a microprocessor, a read-only-memory (ROM), arandom-access-memory (RAM) with a stored program andpredetermined template data, and a terminal with akeyboard and display unit. The scanner opticallyscans each document and produces a plurality ofgrey-scale pixel values which are stored in the RAM undercontrol of the microprocessor. The microprocessorprocesses the stored pixel values, and effectivelylocates and segments each character on the document.In accordance with the predetermined template data,the microprocessor recognizes the segmented characterif predefined, and rejects the segmented character ifundefined. The rejected character is then displayedon the display unit for the user to see and identify.In response to identification provided (specified) bythe user via the keyboard, the system develops acustom template or pattern representing (defining) therejected character, and stores the custom template inmemory for future use in recognizing the character.
