An INSL4 gene characterized in that it is expressed in human embryonic bone tissue and ligaments, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) EPIL 1, 2 and 3 encoded by INSL4; (2) a method to detect or identify the localization and/or level of a specific EPIL 1, 2 or 3, or INSL4, or their homologues or variants in a biological sample of bone tissue or ligaments, for the diagnosis of a pathology associated with abnormal EPIL 1, 2 or 3 or INSL4; (3) kits for (2); (4) methods to mark cells of bone tissue and/or ligaments; (5) a method of identifying chemical or biochemical compositions capable of modulating differentiation, regeneration and/or proliferation of human and/or animals bone tissue and/or ligament cells; and (6) a chemical or biochemical composition identified by (5).
