An improved cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery is disclosed. The cathode active material LiCoO2 is obtained by sintering Li2CO3 and CoCO3, which contains residual Li2CO3 not exceeding 10 wt% and has a specific surface area of no greater than 2 m2/g.
