PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new Na+/H+ antiporter protein which is isolated from Atriplex gmelini belonging to halophyte, contains a specific amino acid sequence, consists of a protein having Na+/H+ antiporter activity and is useful in the production or the like of transformed plants having enhanced salt tolerance.;SOLUTION: This protein is a new protein, which contains the amino acid sequence represented by the formula or the amino acid sequence in which one or plural amino acid residues are inserted, deleted or substituted to this sequence and shows Na+/H+ antiporter activity, and is useful in the production or the like of transformed plants having enhanced salt tolerance. This protein is obtained by isolating a mRNA from leaves of Atriplex gmelini belonging to halophyte by a conventional method, synthesizing a cDNA by using this mRNA, then cloning it by means of PCR method using the partial sequence with high homology in the Na+/H+ antiporter gene as a primer and isolating the protein from the transformant obtained by introducing the resultant gene.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
