PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phenolic resin being quite free from formaldehyde, therefore not giving rise to a problem of health, and having improved fire resistance by reacting a phenol with a vinyl compound. ;SOLUTION: A phenol is mixed with a vinyl compound having at least two vinyl groups in a molar ratio of the phenol to the vinyl compound of 1:0.3 to 1:2.0, and the mixture is reacted at 20-200°C in the presence of a catalyst such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, or p-toluenesulfonic acid to obtain a phenolic resin represented by the formula. 1-99 wt.%, desirably, 10-90 wt.% this resin is mixed with 99-1 wt.%, desirably, 90-10 wt.% isocyanate compound, and the mixture is reacted at 0-170°C, desirably, 20-150°C in the presence of, optionally, a blowing agent and a catalyst such as an amine compound or a halogen compound to obtain a phenolic resin/isocyanate compound composite (foamed) material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
