PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a light-orienting material comprising a specific maleimide homopolymer containing a polymaleimide as a main chain and having excellent heat resistance and optical characteristics. SOLUTION: This light-orienting material comprises a maleimide homopolymer of formula I R is a group of formula II [R1 is a group of formula III ((p) is 0-6) or the like; R2 is X, a group of formula IV (X is F, H or CN; Y is F or H) or the like; R3 is H or CH3]) or a maleimide copolymer of formula V. An orienting film for a liquid crystal display is obtained by dissolving the light-orienting material in an organic solvent (for example, chlorobenzene) in a concentration of 1-10 wt.% and in a viscosity of 5-50 cPs, coating the solution on an ITO glass substrate in a thickness of 500-1,000 by a spin coating method or a printing method and subsequently obliquely irradiating the surface of the formed orienting film with UV light linearly polarized using a polarizer for 3-10 min.
