摘要

PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal oriented film which uniformly and stably orients liquid crystals without rubbing for a liquid crystal display device and exhibits a pre-tilt angle, a method for treating the film, a liquid crystal holding substrate having the film, a liquid crystal display element and its material. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal oriented film is formed by irradiating a film of a resin which is photoisomerizable and includes a constituting unit exhibiting dichromaticity with linearly polarized light to impart a capacity to orient the liquid crystals and imobilizing such film. Since there is no need for rubbing the film, the display defect occurring in adhesion of fibers and dust does not arise. The destruction of switching elements due to static electricity does not arise with the active matrix type liquid crystal display element. The liquid crystal holding substrate and liquid crystal display element which uniformly and stably orient the liquid crystals and exhibit the pre-tilt angle are thus obtained.
