PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer loaded with a dot impact printing head, capable of appropriately judging the limit of the power supply ability of a driving power source, and a method for driving the dot impact printing head. ;SOLUTION: In a dot impact printer having two printing modes including a high speed printing mode and a low speed printing mode, a printing head drive controlling part 3 provided with a masking means 32 for masking a voltage drop detection signal PD only in the low speed printing mode, outputs a low speed mode command signal LMP to a main scan controlling part 6 in the case the voltage drop detection signal PD is received in the high speed printing mode as well as controls the wire drive of a printing head 2 by a low speed timing so as to switch the printing mode to the low speed printing mode.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
