PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate color display characteristics of a color picture display equipment without a colorimeter and to permit compensation by making the color picture display equipment whose color display characteristics are known a reference display equipment and adjusting color data so that the same colors are seen. SOLUTION: First, a reference color data table 130 to be used for estimation processing of color display characteristics is read, reference color data selected out of them are inputted to unknown display equipment 20, whose color display characteristics are unknown, and displayed. Next, the reference color data inputted to the unknown display equipment 20 are inputted to reference display equipment 10, whose color display characteristics are known, and displayed. Then, while a color displayed on the unknown display equipment 20 and a color displayed on the reference equipment 10 are compared with each other, a keyboard or the like is used, the color data to be inputted to the reference equipment 10 are changed little by little and the color displayed on the reference display equipment 10 is adjusted so that it is looked the same to a human as the color displayed on the unknown display equipment 20. The adjusted color data are recorded in a correction color data table 140 as correction color data.
