Color Dependence Characteristics of 'Wash Out' Tolerance of Automotive Multicolor Vacuum Fluorescent Displays(VFDs)

The emissive displays deteriorate the legibility under bright light, which is so called "Wash Out". In the case of in vehicle VFDs, red images are further readable than green or other colors, even though the luminance is set at the same level. It seams to be contradictory to the standard photopic luminosity characteristics. This paper shows why the situation occurs and the mechanism for that in terms of "uniformity of perception depending on colors", through some experiments.
