PURPOSE:To improve the control accuracy of the partitioning plate of a gain selecting device by fetching the picture signals of the near infrared ray areas from the rough rice and the unpolished rice illuminated by an infrared LED and processing these picture signals to produce the distribution pictures of both types of rice. CONSTITUTION:An illumination device 53 contains plural pieces of LED 54, and an image pickup means 50 consists of a monochromatic TV camera 51 and a visible light cut filter 52. The picture signals inputted to a picture processing means 100 belong to the near infrared rays by the function of the filter 52 and are clear enough to recognize the grains and especially to discriminate the rough rice from the unpolished rice. An arithmetic part 101 of the means 100 quantizes and then smoothes the picture signals received from the camera 51 and furthermore normalizes these signals in terms of the luminance. A binary picture processing part 102 produces a binarizing picture where the rough rice and the unpolished rice are defined as 1 and 0 respectively against the picture obtained via the part 101. In addition, the means 100 controls a controller 104 which produces the control signal for a 1st partitioning plate to the evaluation carried out at an evaluating part 103.
