B USE AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION OF AN EFFECTIVE ANTIBIOTIC TO TREAT OR AVOID BACTERIAL INFECTION IN AN ANIMAL D. The present invention provides a method of injecting an antibiotic into an animal's ear, such as cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. These injectable antibiotics include the following: injectable suspensions of moderately water-soluble antimicrobial agents, such as procaine penicillin, benzathine penicillin, ceftiofur crystalline free acid of formula (I), ceftiofur hydrochloride, ampicillin hydrochloride and amoxicillin trihydrate; non-aqueous solutions of continuous release of moderately water-soluble antimicrobial agents, such as oxytetracycline, erythromycin, tylosin, tilmicosin and florfenicol; and injectable solutions of zwitterionic antimicrobial agents, such as enrofloxacin, danofloxacin, premafloxacin, sodium ceftiofur and lincomycin hydrochloride. Specifically, the present invention provides a method of injecting a relatively large volume (1 to 15 ml) of a sterile oil suspension of an antibiotic, such as crystalline free acid ceftiofur, into the back of the ear of cattle and pigs. The compound of formula (I) is also referred to as 7- [2- (2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl) -2-methoxyimino) acetamino] -3 - [(fur-2-ilcar bonila) thiomethyl ] -3-cefem-4-carboxylic acid.
