This invention relates to a method for preventing germination in vegetatively propagating plants, such as potatoes, strawberries, bananas and bulbous plants, such as onions, bulbous flowering plants, by transforming a plant or plant from one of its parental lines to a gene encoding trehalose phosphate synthase.
