A retinoic acid compound is used on the manufacture of a medicament for inhibiting the production of tumour necrosis factor or the production of nitric oxide in an animal with a pathphysiological state selected from sepsis, autoimmune disease, cachexia, cerebral malaria and capillary leak syndrome. The retinoic acid compound can be trans-retinoic acid, 4-hydroxy-retinoic acid or 13-cis retinoic acid.
