The method comprises dispensing, substantially continuously, vapourised disinfectant into or in close proximity to the dryer (10) so that an amount of the disinfectant circulates in an area around and within the dryer (10) and is entrained in the stream of air emitted from the dryer (10). The disinfectant contains triethylene glycol. A hand dryer (10) comprises a housing and a liquid or solid carrier (19) impregnate with a disinfectant containing triethylene glycol is positioned in or on the housing for disinfecting the dryer. A stream of air is emitted from the dryer or both.
