A method for genetically engineering cells to produce soluble and secretableGolgi processing enzymes instead of naturallyoccurring membrane-bound enzymes. Cells are genetically engineered to expressglycosyltransferases which lack both a membraneanchor and a retention signal. The resulting altered enzyme becomes solubleand secretable by the cell without losing its catalyticactivity. Secretion of the soluble glycosyltransferase by the cell providesfor increased production and simplified recoveryof glycosyltransferase.
