Unique amorphous silica materials are prepared by treating silica powder with water and a mineralizing agent at a temperature of 85 to 300°C for a time of 4 to 216 hr. The resulting hydrothermally treated silica material has a surface area of less than 30 m2/g, a unimodal pore size distribution in the size range of 30 to 2,500 nanometers and having at least 10% Q3 silanols and less than 0.5% Q2 silanols as determined by its nuclear magnetic resonance signature.
