The invention relates to the production of polyploid plants, especially to the development of a new species of lupin, characterised in that protoplasts are produced from diploid plants; said protoplasts are fused and polyprotoplasts are isolated; conceptive ovaries of a recipient plant are opened; the isolated polyprotoplasts are inserted into the embryo-sac; the ovaries are closed; the stigma of the recipient ovary is pollinated with the mature pollen of a foreign plant; the polyploid plant embryo matures into a germinative seed and the seed germinates into a polyploid plant.
