Roughening up and activating metallic and conducting surfaces of workpieces with a spark plasma has the workpiece forming an electrode of the spark discharge. A periodically igniting spark plasma is formed in a reactive gas which is passed over the spark electrode. Preferred Features: The plasma is ignited in a pressure range 2 bars, especially 0.8-1.2 bars. As a reactive gas to a flow made out of inert gas, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water or air, a metallic-organic compound, especially a silicon-organic compound is added in a mixing ratio of 1:1000-1:10, preferably 1:100-1:10.
