Automatically controlled sub-surface filtration sampler for use in sea water, lakes and rivers suitable for both short and long-term water sampling

A water filtration system (100) abstracts especially sea or fresh water samples at given depths. The filtration system has a motor (18) powered sample-changer (16) and sample holder unit (36). The sample changer moves sample holders in sequence through the rinsing station, sampling station, and a toxification station in which a given sample is conserved. The unit (36) further has a pump (12) linked by tubes to the filtration system (100). The pump moves fluid from around the filter system to or through the rinsing station, or to the respective sampler. A flow meter (14) determines the volume of fluid moved by the pump (12). The motor (18) and pump are automatically operated by an microcomputer control unit (22) at given intervals. The unit is equipped with a data logger interface. Also claimed is a method of operation.
