Transgenic plant with increased resistance to infection by phytopathogens, especially Phythophthora infestans, contains, in its genome, a gene construct comprising a heterologous promoter, and a sequence (I) encoding a hydroxycinnamic acid-coenzyme A:tyramine N-(hydroxycinnamic acid) transferase (II), under the control of the promoter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a tissue culture containing parts or organs of the novel plant; (2) sprouted tubers of the novel plant; (3) a nucleic acid (Ia) encoding a specific (II); (4) a construct containing (Ia) under the control of expression regulating elements; and (5) a method for preparing the novel plant.
