Colorant for fibers contains a 4-nitrophenyl-N-heterocyclic, -cycloalkane, -alkoxyalkane or -amine compound of formula (I); R1 = H or linear or branched 1-4C alkyl; Y = a heterocyclic ring of formula (II), 1-6 C cycloalkyl, an alkoxy group of the formula (CH2)zOR4 or an amino group NR2R3; X = N or O; m = 1, 2 or 3; n = 0 or 1; z = 1-6; R4 = linear or branched 1-4 C alkyl; R2, R3 = H (but not both H simultaneously) (sic). (N.B. The definitions given for Y are phrased ambiguously; the interpretation given is literal but the values ''(CH2)zOR4'' and ''1-6 C (sic) cycloalkyl'' could possibly relate to X or should be added to the definitions for R2 and R3. The latter option would explain the lack of an alternative to H in the R2, R3 definition when the given proviso would require such an alternative).
