A process for the hardening of japan lacquer on solid surfaces by means of (A) a polymerizable hardening agent and (B) an initiator is claimed. (B) is preferably a thermal radical initiator such as azobisisobutyronitrile, dibenzoyl peroxide or cumene hydroperoxide or is a photoinitiator, preferably camphor quinone used with light.
