The flyer sliver drawing unit, followed by a condensing zone defined by a clamping point, has a pneumatic sliver compression unit (9) at the condensing zone (8). The pneumatic compression unit (9) has a suction system (12), with a suction slit (16) on the movement line (A) of the sliver (7). The slit (16) is covered by an air-permeable carrier surface (17) to guide the sliver (7). The suction slit (16) extends as far as the clamping point (10). The sliver carrier surface is formed by at least one moving belt (17) or a mesh roller. The carrier surface has an air-permeable working width which is wider than the suction slit (16). The suction slit (16) is wider than the sliver (7).
