The apparatus to condense a drawn sliver, at a drawing unit for a spinner, has a clamping roller (17) where its circumference is divided axially into a number of zones (24-26). One zone (24) is towards the sliver and at least one further zone (25,26) has a surface (28,29) with an increased friction. The clamping roller at a sliver condensing zone can have two axial zones next to each other. One is towards the sliver and the other is alongside the sliver and with an increased friction surface against the sliver transport belt. With three axial surface zones, the center zone is against the sliver and the flanking zones have surfaces with an increased friction against the surface of the sliver transport belt. The surfaces with an increased friction contain an adhesion agent, or they are structured with lateral grooves or thin cord ribs or pimples. The roller surface towards the sliver has a relatively hard elastic cladding, and the zones with a higher friction surface have a relatively soft elastic cladding.
